This is one of America's most loved lotteries available in 45 states. It is also played in the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. It is run by the non-profit body Multi-State Lottery Association. The lottery began in 1992. Back then, draws happened twice a week.

A third day was added in August 2021 to bring the draw days to Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, all done at 11 PM Eastern Time. They happen at Universal Studios, Orlando, hosted by Michelle Liles, Laura Johnson, and Sam Arlen. Carol and Company audit the draws.

Players win by getting five correct picks from a pot of 69 white balls plus one 'Powerball' from a bag of 26. The minimum win advertised for Powerball is $20 million that is paid out in 30 installments. A player may, however, opt for a lump sum payment. Powerball's $1.586 billion jackpot in 2016 was the largest in lottery history. It was split among three tickets.
