Lottery software: what it can and cannot do
No software changes the odds of a lottery line. Every combination has the same chance in every draw, and past draws have no effect on the next one. A program that analyses old results, ranks numbers as hot or cold or claims to predict the draw is describing the past, not the future.
Some lottery software is still useful: ticket checkers, syndicate record keepers, odds calculators and random number pickers. They save time and keep you organised. They do not make a win more likely, and anything sold on the promise that it does is selling you something that cannot work.
The only things that change your chance of a jackpot are how many different lines you hold, which rises in direct proportion to what you spend, and which lottery you play. The maths below shows what that looks like for EuroMillions.
- No software changes the odds of a line
- Past draws do not affect the next draw
- More different lines raise your odds in proportion to spend
- Useful tools organise your play; they do not predict
The only odds that move: more lines
EuroMillions jackpot odds for each number of different lines. No program can improve on this table for the same number of lines.
Any single line, whether picked by software, by birthday or at random, has exactly the same chance of matching the draw. Holding more different lines is the only way to raise the chance of a jackpot in a given draw, and the cost rises in step.
Wheeling software does not get around this. A wheel arranges your chosen numbers into many lines; it covers more combinations only because you pay for more lines, and each line still has the same chance as any other.
- 1 line 1 in 139,838,160
- 10 lines 1 in 13,983,816
- 50 lines 1 in 2,796,763
- 100 lines 1 in 1,398,382
- 500 lines 1 in 279,676
| Lines | Group odds of the jackpot | Against one line |
|---|---|---|
| 1 line | 1 in 139,838,160 | 1× as likely |
| 10 lines | 1 in 13,983,816 | 10× as likely |
| 50 lines | 1 in 2,796,763 | 50× as likely |
| 100 lines | 1 in 1,398,382 | 100× as likely |
| 500 lines | 1 in 279,676 | 500× as likely |
One EuroMillions line has jackpot odds of 1 in 139,838,160. Different lines add their chances; a shared prize is split by share.
What lottery software is good for
Checking tickets
Scans or stores your lines and checks them against the results, so a prize is not missed.
Running a syndicate
Tracks who paid for which draw, which lines the group holds and how prizes are split.
Working out odds
An odds calculator shows the real chance of each prize tier for a given number of lines. It informs your budget; it does not improve the odds.
Random picks
A random number generator is as good as any other way to choose a line, and avoids the birthday numbers many people share.
Signs a lottery program is selling you nothing
-
Walk away
It claims to raise your odds
No method can make one combination more likely than another. Any such claim is false.
-
Walk away
It sells hot and cold numbers
Frequency charts describe past draws. The balls have no memory, so the next draw is unaffected.
-
Walk away
It promises a guaranteed win
Only buying every combination guarantees a jackpot, and that costs more than the jackpot is likely to pay.
-
Walk away
It hides its method
Talk of secret algorithms or patterns without a clear, checkable explanation is a sales tactic.
-
Walk away
It charges a subscription for predictions
You would be paying every month for random numbers you can generate for free.
-
Walk away
It shows testimonials of big wins
Some people win with any method, because someone wins most jackpots. That is not evidence the software worked.
Lottery software: questions
Can lottery software predict the winning numbers?
No. Draws are random, every combination has the same chance each time, and past results do not affect the next draw. Software that claims to predict numbers is describing past draws, not future ones. More on this in our guide to the lottery predictor.
Does lottery software improve my odds?
No software changes the odds. The only ways to raise your chance of a jackpot are to hold more different lines, which costs more in direct proportion, or to play a lottery with better odds. Compare draws on lotto winning odds.
What about hot and cold numbers?
Hot and cold lists count how often numbers came up before. That is history, not a forecast. Each draw is independent, so a number that has not appeared for months is no more due than any other. See hot and cold lotto numbers.
Is wheeling software a good idea?
A wheel turns a set of numbers into many lines. You hold more combinations only because you pay for more lines, and each line has the same chance as any other. It can be a tidy way to organise a syndicate's lines; it is not an edge.
Is any lottery software worth using?
Yes, for organising rather than predicting: ticket checkers, syndicate trackers, odds calculators and random pickers. A free number generator picks lines as well as any paid program.
Are lottery software sellers ever scams?
Some are. A product that promises guaranteed wins, insider systems or better odds for a fee is selling something that cannot work. See lottery scams for the common patterns.
Set the spend before you pick the numbers.
Most lottery lines win nothing. Decide a monthly amount you can lose, and use the deposit limits on the site you play at.
