Mount Whitney's annual permit lottery is now open, offering hikers a chance to scale the highest peak in the contiguous United States during peak season.
Mount Whitney, standing at 14,505 feet, is a coveted destination for hikers and climbers. The U.S. Forest Service has opened its annual lottery for permits to ascend this iconic peak during the busiest months.
The lottery system, accessible through Recreation.gov, closes on March 1 at 11:59 p.m. Successful applicants will be notified on March 15, giving them the opportunity to secure one of the limited permits for day or overnight hikes between May 1 and November 1.
With approximately 30,000 people attempting to summit Mount Whitney each year, the permit system aims to manage the impact on the environment and maintain the wilderness experience. Day permits are capped at 100 per day, while overnight permits are limited to 60 daily.
The popularity of Mount Whitney is evident in the lottery statistics. In 2022, 71% of the 26,767 applications were unsuccessful, representing 115,209 hopeful hikers. July and August prove to be the most competitive months, with the first weekend in August seeing only 1% of applicants securing permits.
For those lucky enough to win the lottery, a $15 per-person reservation fee is required by April 21 to confirm the booking. Any unclaimed permits will be released for online booking on April 22 at 7 a.m.
Climbing Mount Whitney is not for the faint-hearted. The main trail involves an elevation gain of over 6,000 feet from Whitney Portal. Altitude sickness is a common challenge, and sadly, around four fatalities occur annually, with dozens requiring rescue.
For those considering entering the lottery, it's crucial to be prepared for the physical demands and potential risks associated with high-altitude hiking. The lottery system, while competitive, ensures that this natural wonder remains accessible while being protected for future generations to enjoy.
