Lottery number generators

A lottery number generator picks numbers for you: a random set in the right range for the game you play. Most lottery sites build one in as a quick pick, and plenty of free tools do the same job.

A good generator is useful because it is random. It saves time and avoids the patterns people fall into when they choose by hand, such as birthdays. What it cannot do is make a line more likely to win. Every line in a draw has the same odds however it was chosen, and past draws have no effect on the next one.

Some generators promise more: frequency analysis, hot and cold balancing, or wheels that claim better odds. This guide explains what each type really does.

  • A generated line has the same odds as any other line
  • Random picks avoid the date-heavy lines many players share
  • No tool can predict a draw

Mega Millions odds for generated lines

Jackpot odds by number of different lines in one draw. Where the numbers came from makes no difference to any row.

A Mega Millions line is 5 numbers from 70 plus 1 Mega Ball from 24, which gives 290,472,336 possible lines. A generator picks one of them at random, and so does a quick pick, a predictor app or a person with a pen. Each line holds a 1 in 290,472,336 chance of the jackpot.

  1. 1 line 1 in 290,472,336
  2. 10 lines 1 in 29,047,234
  3. 50 lines 1 in 5,809,447
  4. 100 lines 1 in 2,904,723
  5. 500 lines 1 in 580,945
Lines Group odds of the jackpot Against one line
1 line 1 in 290,472,336 1× as likely
10 lines 1 in 29,047,234 10× as likely
50 lines 1 in 5,809,447 50× as likely
100 lines 1 in 2,904,723 100× as likely
500 lines 1 in 580,945 500× as likely

One Mega Millions line has jackpot odds of 1 in 290,472,336. Different lines add their chances; a shared prize is split by share.

Panel Types

Types of generator, and what they really do

Random generator

Picks numbers evenly at random across the game's range. Same odds as any line; good for speed and for avoiding common date patterns.

Frequency or hot and cold

Builds lines from counts of past results. The next draw does not depend on earlier ones, so this is a random pick with extra steps.

Wheel

Spreads a set of chosen numbers across many lines and can guarantee a minor prize if enough of them are drawn. Every line is a ticket you pay for, so the odds per line stay the same.

Quick pick

The lottery site's own random pick at checkout. In odds terms it is identical to any other random generator.

Panel Before you generate

Using a generator sensibly

  1. Match the game

Main and bonus number ranges differ between lotteries, so make sure the tool is set to the game on your ticket.

  2. Ignore promises of better odds

A tool that says it raises your chance of a jackpot is wrong, whatever charts it shows.

  3. Do not pay for predictions

A free random generator does the whole job. Paid prediction tools sell you a line with exactly the same odds.

  4. Fix the spend

Generating more lines is free; buying them is not. Decide the budget before you press the button.

Panel Questions

Number generators: questions

Can a lottery number generator increase my chances of winning?

No. A generated line has exactly the same odds as a line you choose yourself or a quick pick. Only holding more different lines, or playing a lottery with fewer possible combinations, changes your chance of the jackpot.

Are generated numbers really random?

A plain random generator is, within the game's number range. Tools that weight numbers by past results are less random by design, and the weighting does not help: the next draw does not depend on earlier ones.

Is a generator better than a quick pick?

There is no difference in odds. A quick pick is the lottery site's own random generator, so use whichever is easier.

Does a wheeling system improve the odds?

Not per line. A wheel spreads numbers across many lines and can guarantee some lower-tier prize combinations if enough of your numbers are drawn, but you buy every one of those lines. Ten lines from a wheel have the same jackpot chance as any ten different lines.

Do random lines help me avoid sharing a jackpot?

They can. Hand-picked lines lean on birthdays and simple patterns, so many players hold similar lines. Random lines are spread more evenly, so if one wins it is less likely to be shared. It is not more likely to win.

How do I check a generated line after the draw?

Compare it with the official numbers on our results pages, or let the lottery site check your tickets. For more on choosing numbers, see our lottery strategies guide.

Set the spend before you pick the numbers.

Most lottery lines win nothing. Decide a monthly amount you can lose, and use the deposit limits on the site you play at.
